International Trumpet Guild Journal Review of Terry Gordon Quintet - Tangents

Review by Michael Hackett (ITG Journal)

Tangents is a collection of originals, mostly by Gordon, that showcases this Albany, NY-based ensemble. Gordon proves himself as a tunesmith in this varied collection of vehicles that ranges from '70s rock to straight-up swinging blues. Gordon shows ample command of the instrument and a lyrical voice in his improvisations while the sax (mostly tenor) of Walentowicz burns with Brecker-infused fire. Guitarist Michael-Louis Smith plays the inside/outside game much of the time, and his ride on the rock groove of “Amalgamatorium” is a standout with the wah-wah pedal and distortion used to great effect. This tune also features a burning turn from the trumpeter and tenor as well, and drummer Sweeney takes a memorable solo before the return of the melody.

“Until Then” is a lush ballad that highlights the warm tone of the trumpeter. Gordon is at his best here as he weaves through the chords with ease, and his beautiful tone reflects years of dedication to the study of the music. “Changes” is a bright samba that opens with an attractive descending sequence of chords, and the musicians respond with zeal, providing a highlight of this recording. The soaring tenor of Walentowicz follows Gordon's deft ride, and Smith chimes in with some bebop of his own before the tenor returns with the melody. “Tangents” is one of the more interesting compositions on this CD, with a whole-tone-based harmonic structure that verges on atonality but never quite jettisons its tonal center. Gordon provides some interesting lines, and bassist Lawrence proves to be a central figure who anchors the entire affair with swing and strong melodic lines while Walentowicz wails on soprano saxophone. This is an attractive recording of mainstream jazz, featuring fine compositions and excellent playing throughout.
